About the Support Coordinator Network
Established in September 2021 in response to gaps identified in Support Coordination in the disability sector in Australia. Specifically, the need for more training, support and resourcing for these frontline providers. Support Coordinators are those who provide specific services supporting participants of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to manage their plans and to achieve the best value from their services for the lifecycle of their plan (To see the full National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) description of Support Coordination, Click Here).
The Support Coordinator Network began as an idea that the role could be more effective, suffer less burnout and be better understood by all stakeholders if there was better training, funding, support, resourcing and networking. Overnight, we went from one frustrated provider reaching out on social media to 37 Network members. We now number over 5000 across three specifically dedicated groups and cater to a much broader cross section of providers - no longer limited to Support Coordinators.
In the time we have been established, we have provided training, resourcing, networking, monthly meet-and-greet sessions, and discussion groups. Some of our members have accessed individual coaching and training to improve skills and understanding, and in many cases, to improve their business practices or further their goal of starting out as independent providers.
We have been working together via social media, telephone and video conferencing. Like the rest of the world, we know how much can be achieved without the need for expensive venue hire and interstate travel. Having said that, those of us who have been fortunate enough to do so have had face-to-face meet-ups and are building the strength of the Network in that way also.
Overwhelmingly, the feeling among Support Coordinators is that the role has been 'demonised' by those in leadership and this has caused a 'them and us' mentality. As the Director and Founder of the Support Coordinator Network, it is my personal goal to create open communication to eliminate the gulf of misunderstanding between the Agency and providers by striving toward realistic expectation and transparency for ethical practice and mutually shared goals for a sustainable NDIS.
I invite all interested parties to become involved in a positive and proactive way and join me in achieving this vision for our sector and, most importantly, for the better provision of services for all NDIS participants, their families, carers and supports.
